Regulations in France
Exemptions
An exemption is required for indivisible loads measuring 16.50 x 2.55 x 4.00 or weighing 44,000 kg or more.
In the case of a motor vehicle with a trailer, an exemption for indivisible cargo is required for dimensions exceeding: 18.75 x 2.55 x 4.00 x 44,000 kg.
In France, there are a number of options when it comes to exemptions. Below is an overview of the different types of exemptions.
A route map is required for standard CAT 1 and 2 exemptions. These route maps show the routes that are part of the respective network. You can order a network card from NL Exceptioneel.
In addition to a CAT permit, it is also possible to apply for a local permit in France for a specific route, or for a so-called connecting permit that connects to the CAT 2 network.
Guided Tours
With regard to guidance, the schedule below can be used for France. If the box is gray and contains no text, this means that these dimensions do not apply to the category above. Here’s an example to illustrate this. A CAT 1 exemption has a maximum length of twenty meters, which means that only the first section applies to a CAT 1 exemption.
GuidedTours: “Guidage” refers to guided tours led by private guides on yellow motorcycles. If no guides are available, the police can escort the transport. It is also possible that police escort may be required under the terms of the exemption.
Travel Times
Driving times in France may vary by department and by highway. Throughout France, a driving ban on special-purpose transport is in effect from 12:00 p.m. on Saturday—or the day before a public holiday—through 6:00 a.m. on Monday—or the day after a public holiday. Driving is prohibited during snowfall, freezing rain, or poor visibility.
