Regulations in the Netherlands
Exemptions
An exemption is required for indivisible cargo measuring 22.00 x 3.00 x 4.00 or weighing 50,000 kg or more.
In the Netherlands, a distinction is made between a long-term exemption and an occasional exemption.
Long-term exemption:
A long-term exemption can be requested for the license plate of a tractor or a semi-trailer. In the Netherlands, the long-term exemption is valid for one year. The maximum dimensions are:
- Tractor: 22.00 x 3.50 x 4.25 x 50,000 kg.
- Semi-trailer: 27.50 x 3.50 x 4.25 x 100,000 kg.
For a long-term exemption, the maximum dimensions depend on the vehicle’s technical capabilities.
One-time exemption:
If a long-term exemption is not sufficient, an ad hoc exemption may be requested. A one-time exemption is valid for a minimum of four and a maximum of twelve weeks.
Guided Tours
When it comes to regulations governing the escort of transport vehicles, a distinction is made in the Netherlands between the lower-level road network and the upper-level road network.
In general, the diagrams below can be used as a guide:
Underlying road network:
Primary road network: motorways, including the N2, N3, N7, N15, and N57 (Rotterdam – Brielle)
Self-driving machinery
Different regulations apply to self-propelled machinery, such as mobile cranes. In this case, an exemption is required if:
Width > 3.00 m.
Length > 20.00 m.
Axle load > 12,000 kg.
Mass > 60,000 kg.
Travel Times
A distinction is also made between the upper-level and lower-level road networks with regard to driving times. Below is an overview of the driving times. As far as Saturdays and Sundays are concerned, there are generally no restrictions, but the road authority’s guidance takes precedence.
